Project Summary

This project will provide site restoration of 25-acres by removing invasive vegetation, conversion of abandoned fishponds to native wetland/upland habitat, creation of native estuarine and coastal upland habitats. The surrounding area experienced flooding during the 2024 storm season, resulting in significant damage to the existing natural stormwater storage. Per the Unmet Needs Analysis within the County's Action Plan, flooding was identified as a hazard that impacted infrastructure that continues to persist.

Community Benefit

The project will reduce coastal flooding by 1) receiving stormwater runoff from adjacent lands and increasing holding capacity in a vulnerable, low-lying area and 2) providing a more resilient green infrastructure system to mitigate the impacts of storm surge associated with future tropical storms and hurricanes. This project will be carried out under the Infrastructure Program to address known infrastructure deficiencies, provide mitigation and resilience measures to better protect infrastructure from increased frequency and severity of storm events, and align with the County’s long-term recovery and resiliency strategy.
