Project Summary
The Ruskin Low-Pressure Sewer System (LPSS) Conversion project will replace a portion of the County’s LPSSs in the Ruskin community with a vacuum sewer collection system and vacuum pump station, facilitating the conversion from LPSS to the newly constructed central vacuum sewer system. The Ruskin LPSS Conversion project has been split into two separate phases to properly address the completion of this large-scale project. This project encompasses the completion of LPSS Phase 1, which will include the construction of the central infrastructure for the vacuum sewer system in the southern portion of the planned Ruskin Area B sewer shed and the conversion of 750 LPSS customers to the new system. Upon the completion of LPSS Phase 1, the vacuum system will be fully functional and operational. Future phases will include the necessary infrastructure to extend vacuum sewer service to the remaining properties within the planned service area and convert the remaining LPSS customers to the new vacuum system.
Community Benefit
This project is part of a comprehensive program aimed at converting LPSSs to a centralized sewer system. One key objective of the program is to improve public health by reducing the risk of groundwater contamination and the potential spread of waterborne diseases. Additionally, these conversions prevent nutrient and pollutant leakage into soil and waterways as vacuum sewer systems are generally more reliable and require less maintenance than LPSS. As a result, sewer conversions support community growth and provide better infrastructure planning and maintenance. This project will be carried out under the Infrastructure Program to address (1) known infrastructure deficiencies, (2) provide mitigation and resilience measures to better protect infrastructure from increased frequency and severity of storm events, and (3) align with the County’s long-term recovery and resiliency strategy.
