Project Summary

The project provides for the restoration and enhancement of 93-acres of freshwater stream and ephemeral wetland habitat (SRWNP Phase 1), and 131-acres of adjacent upland habitat (SRWNP Phase 2). The surrounding area experienced flooding during the 2024 storm season, resulting in significant damage to the existing freshwater streams and ephemeral wetland habitats. Per the Unmet Needs Analysis within the County's Action Plan, flooding was identified as a hazard that impacted infrastructure that continues to persist. This project will be carried out under the Infrastructure Program to address (1) known infrastructure deficiencies, (2) provide mitigation and resilience measures to better protect infrastructure from increased frequency and severity of storm events, and (3) align with the County’s long-term recovery and resiliency strategy.

Community Benefit

The project will bring hydrologic benefits, including reduction in velocity of water flows, increase in on-site water storage and hydroperiod residence time, reduction of downstream flooding, and reduction of nutrient loading and sedimentation within downstream portions of Little Bullfrog Creek, Bullfrog Creek, and Tampa Bay. Other environmental benefits include habitat connectivity provides a migratory pathway for many species, including white tailed deer, bobcat, gopher tortoise, and Eastern indigo snake; streambank restoration and wetland creation that provide foraging habitat for state and federally threatened bird species including wood stork, Florida sandhill crane, little blue heron, tricolored heron, roseate spoonbill, and Southeastern American kestrel; and water quality improvements to the Bullfrog Creek watershed that will reduce nutrient loading into Tampa Bay, which is essential for maintaining the health of seagrass and fisheries habitat for many commercially and recreationally important fish species.
