Summary
The Environmental Lands Acquisition project will acquire and restore undeveloped coastal lands along the eastern shoreline of Tampa Bay to preserve natural floodplain functions and reduce future flood and storm surge risks, and support long-term environmental resilience. The need for this project was underscored by the storm surge and flooding impacts of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which highlighted the risks associated with development in low-lying coastal areas. Through strategic land acquisition and restoration, the project will prevent future development in highly vulnerable flood-prone areas, preserve natural floodplains and coastal habitats that serve as resilient green infrastructure, and provide opportunities for wetland creation and restoration that improve water movement through creeks and tributaries.
Community Benefit
The Environmental Lands Acquisition project will help reduce coastal flooding and storm surge impacts by preserving low-lying coastal lands that naturally absorb, store, and slow floodwaters during severe weather events. By protecting these areas from future development, the project will maintain critical floodplain functions, preserve coastal habitats, and create opportunities for wetland restoration that improve water movement through creeks and tributaries. These natural systems will provide lasting protection for nearby communities while preserving the environmental resources that make the Tampa Bay shoreline more resilient to future coastal hazards.
